Ophiocordyceps cossidarum

Ophiocordyceps cossidarum Y.P. Xiao, T.C. Wen, Zha & K.D. Hyde, in Hyde et al., Fungal Diversity 87: 153 (2017)

Index Fungorum number: IF553194; Faces of fungi number: FoF 3278

Parasitic in larvae of insect (Lepidoptera: Cossidae), collected from buried in forest soils near root of the tree. Sexual morph: Thallus within host. Stroma reddish-brown or cinnamon to brown on one end of the insect larva, mostly erect. Stroma usually solitary, simple, 40-70 mm high. Stipe simple, cylindrical, 25-65 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, depending on the one side of the insect larva. Fertile head distinctly sub-terminal with asexual state at apex. Ascomata 355–454 × 136–171 μm ( = 405 × 153 µm, n = 30), immersed, red, ovate to phialide, red-walled. Peridium 26–35 mm ( = 31 µm, n = 60) wide, red, three layer. Asci 174–221 × 5.7–7 μm (= 197 × 6.4 µm, n = 60) hyaline, cylindrical, 8-spored with a thickened apex. Apical cap 2.5–3.8 × 4.3–5.7 μm ( = 3.1 × 5 µm, n = 60), hyaline. Ascospores 131–153 × 1.8–2.2 μm ( = 142 × 2 µm, n = 60), hyaline, filiform, multiseptate breaking into 32 part-spores. Part spores 3.7–4.8 × 1.8–2.4 μm ( = 4.2 × 2.1 µm, n = 60), hyaline, cylindrical and truncated at the ends. Asexual morph: Undetermined. (Hyde et al. 2017)

Known hosts and distributions: on larvae of insect (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) (Chiang Mai, Thailand) (Hyde et al. 2017).

Sequence data: MFLU 17-0752 (SSU = MF398186, LSU = MF398187, TEF = MF928403, RPB1 = MF928404). Phylogenetic tree (see entry: Ophiocordyceps issidarum) (Hyde et al. 2017)
